Day 19 - Rediscovering Joy in Simple Moments
In our hectic lives, we often overlook the small moments that carry genuine happiness. Rediscovering joy in everyday experiences like the warmth of morning sunlight on your face, the rich aroma of freshly brewed tea, or the soft feel of grass beneath your feet; can nourish mental wellbeing and build lasting resilience. These seemingly insignificant instances are, in fact, fertile ground for gratitude and calm.
When we intentionally pause to notice these subtle delights, our nervous system shifts from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest mode. Neuroscientists have found that savouring micro-moments activates the brain’s reward circuitry, strengthening neural pathways associated with positivity and making us more adept at spotting joy, even during stressful times. Over weeks and months, this gentle rewiring supports emotional balance, reduces rumination and lights up our mood more reliably than we might expect.
Practical ways to spot simple joy
Morning pause: Before diving into emails or newsfeeds, take two uninterrupted minutes to savour and enjoy your first sip of coffee or tea. Notice the warmth on your palate, the interplay of aromas and the ritual of holding your mug.
Nature check-ins: Whenever you step outside; walking to the shops or leaving the office; identify three details around you. Perhaps you see a robin flitting between branches, the sky shifting in hue or the reassuring rustle of leaves in a gentle breeze.
Creative fleeting acts: Give yourself permission to hum a tune, sketch a quick doodle or dance freely for a minute. Focus on the pleasure of movement or creativity, not on the final result.
Tech-free breathers: Set a five-minute timer away from all screens. Close your eyes, place a hand on your heart and breathe deeply. Notice how your chest rises and falls, and allow your body to settle into stillness.
Growing these micro-moments reshapes our outlook. We begin to expect small delights rather than constant drama, making our daily experience feel richer. Over time, this practice fosters a sense of contentment that doesn’t depend on external achievement or the next big event.
Deepening the practice (my personalised view)
For me, my biggest joys are often the unplanned ones, activities that are luxurious (to me) – examples:
- A day trip to somewhere you always love to go, but only do it sporadically
- Restaurants that serve the best food you have ever had
- Concerts that leave you buzzing with joy and happiness
- A simple nice home cooked meal (Bacon, Egg and Chips for me is a winner) that you don’t have frequently, or
- Closing my eyes, and listening to music without interruption (did I say building Lego models??)
Why it matters
In a world that often prioritises productivity and busyness, these small pauses reclaim our humanity. They remind us that we deserve kindness from others and from ourselves and that peace is available in the here and now. By training our attention on delight rather than distress, we cultivate the inner resources needed to face life’s bigger challenges with steadier hearts.
This is a conversation for us all – people struggling and those who want to help and support.
