Solestyles Boutique began life on a high street as a curated fashion outlet, specialising in independent designers and limited-edition collections. Yet, like so many small retailers, it found itself shackled by a tangle of Excel workbooks, ad-hoc lists and e-mail threads.

New stock arrivals were logged on paper in the stockroom before someone later keyed the details into a spreadsheet; customer orders came in via phone, in-person or over separate e-commerce channels; and managers spent hours each week labouring over sales reports to understand which lines were moving and which languished in clearance.

As the business grew, so did the pain points.

• Mis-aligned product codes led to shipping errors.
• Staff faced frustrations when they couldn’t check stock levels in real time during the evening pop-ups.
• Head office lacked a single source of truth for performance metrics, making inventory forecasting something of a guessing game.

The brief from my “stakeholders” was therefore simple but ambitious:
