Learning to Trust Your Intuition

Day 16 - Learning to Trust Your Intuition

Intuition – often called our “gut feeling” – is an internal compass shaped by past experiences, embodied knowledge and subtle subconscious cues. Yet all too often, we silence that inner voice in favour of logic, external advice or the fear of making the “wrong” choice. In doing so, we miss out on a valuable source of insight that can speed up decision-making, reduce analysis paralysis and bring our actions into alignment with what truly matters to us.

Life’s daily challenges can leave us second-guessing ourselves at every turn:

  • Which job offer to accept,
  • How to respond to a difficult conversation,
  • Whether to take a chance on a new opportunity.

In these moments, intuition represents the brain’s rapid, pattern-matching system drawing on everything you’ve learned (so far in your life), seen and felt in the past, all within a split second. Whereas over-thinking can trap you in circular doubts, tuning in to your instincts often points you in the right direction before the rational mind even catches up.

Why trust your intuition?

  1. Speed and confidence. Intuitive decisions bypass hours of pros-and-cons lists, giving you clarity when time is short.

  2. Historical wisdom. Your gut synthesises emotional, physical and experiential signals that pure logic overlooks.

  3. Values alignment. Instincts often reflect what matters most to you; your core values and long-term goals; so following them keeps you true to yourself.

How to tune in:

  • Quiet the mind. Begin with a short mindfulness practice or a walk in nature. Notice any physical sensations; tingles, warmth in the chest or a knot in the stomach; and label them without judgment.

  • Journal inner signals. When faced with a decision, jot down your immediate hunches. Do you feel drawn toward one option or repelled by another? Simply naming these reactions builds your “intuition muscle.”

  • Celebrate small wins. Reflect on times when you followed a gut feeling and it paid off, no matter how small. Perhaps you took a different route and avoided traffic, or chose a conversation approach that diffused tension. Acknowledging these successes boosts your trust in instincts.

  • Balance with reason. Intuition thrives when supported by facts, not overridden by them. After tuning in, ask yourself: “What evidence do I have?” Use personalised information and thoughts or experience to refine your inner guidance, not replace it.

Practical steps to embed intuition:

  • Daily check-ins. Pause each morning and ask, “What feels right for me today?” Notice your immediate response before planning your schedule.

  • Peer reflection. Share a decision you made intuitively with a trusted friend. Discuss how the outcome unfolded and what you felt in your body at the time. Externalising your experience reinforces its validity.

Overcoming common blocks:

  • Perfectionism. Fear of a “wrong” gut call often stems from believing mistakes are unacceptable. Remind yourself that even false starts teach you valuable lessons.

  • Self-doubt. If negative self-talk drowns out your instincts place a hand on your heart, breathe deeply and say, “I do my best with what I know now.”

  • Information overload. Too much input dulls intuitive clarity. Limit social-media scrolling or news intake when big decisions loom.

Over time, these practices help you distinguish between fleeting impulses and genuine intuition. You’ll notice decisions that once felt fraught become opportunities to lean into your innate wisdom. Trusting your gut is not about abandoning logic; it’s about integrating both halves of the mind, using reason to support what your body already knows.

Thought of the day:

Think of a recent choice; what did your gut say, and how might you honour that intuition next time?

This is a conversation for us all – people struggling and those who want to help and support.
